The manuscript is not illustrated. From the Bibliothèque Nationale de France:
Exceptional by the number of its illustrations, the French manuscript 12584, in the first half of the 14th century, contains more than five hundred vignettes of very small dimensions. The voluntarily naive aspect, the stylized characters to the extreme and the abundance of miniatures on the same page evoke, for a modern reader, the world of comics . Particularly original, the work of the illuminator cannot be attached to a school. The artist knew how to grasp the parodic character of the novel, to which the comic arrangement of bodies and physical features perfectly responds. Like the goupil, the designer of this work is part of the register of humor and excess.
