Description
The version of the Roman de Renart (romance of Reynard the Fox) cycle known as Renart le Contrefait, a moral and satirical poem composed around 1322 by "a cleric from Troyes". There are two versions of the poem; this is the first version, with about 32000 verses.
There are 34 column-width color illustrations are scattered through the text; many of them are in poor condition. The story of Reynard is interrupted several times to tell moralized tales of ancient persons and events, with illustrations: The dream of the Pharaoh interpreted by Joseph (folio 72r); the legend of Caradoc and the serpent ((folio 74r); and extended retelling of some of the Alexander the Great stories ( folio 95r-131r); and others. Many of these tales are illustrated.
This is the Le Renart le Contrefait manuscript designated A by Raynaud and Lemaître.
