Description

The Romance of Reynard the Fox in French verse. Illustrated with 11 small (column width) full color paintings, plus one marginal image. The illustrations are the start of each of the 12 fables, except the first one, suggesting there may be a folio missing at the start. Three of the illustrations do not involve animals (a woman reading, the wheel of fortune, a castle).

This is the manuscript designated G by Ernest Martin.

Alternate shelfmark: Saint-Germain 1980; Coislin 2733..

From the Bibliothèque Nationale de France:

The illustration cycle of the French manuscript 1580, datable of the years 1310-1315, is attributable to the master of Thomas de Maubeuge, active between 1303 and 1342. There are illuminations on a checkered or gold background, where red, orange, blue and green predominate. ... Much appreciated, the illuminator had to work in series for the Parisian bookseller Thomas de Maubeuge. Another copy, now kept in Oxford (Bodleian Library, MS. Douce 360) presents the same miniatures.
